Book unit stages
Each unit includes four instructional stages. Each stage is designed to support diverse learners who are learning English. These four stages support English language acquisition by balancing the four domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Collapsible content
Part 1: FOUNDATION
The introduction to the unit where you explain and demonstrate the unit focus which revolves around a performance task in writing. Emphasis is on listening and speaking.
Part 2: PAVE THE WAY
The beginning of the unit where you front load ideas, information, and vocabulary. Emphasis is on listening, speaking and reading.
Part 3: LEAD THE WAY
The middle of the unit where you develop skills, strategies, understanding about the topic and develop academic language. Emphasis is on listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Part 4: ASSESS
The end of the unit where students complete a performance task focused on writing. Emphasis is on writing and the writing process.

About the author
Dr. Nancy Akhavan possesses more than thirty years’ experience as an educator and consultant. Her work focuses on student support through literacy instruction and intervention, English Language Development, leadership development, and organizational systems to increase student achievement. An Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, Fresno, she is the founder of Nancy Akhavan Consulting, Inc.
Dr. Akhavan’s positions included: bilingual teacher; principal of three schools; and district administrator of a large, urban district for English Language Acquisition (ELA), Math, Social Studies, Science, and World Languages. She also served as Assistant Superintendent Secondary Division in a large urban school district.
Dr. Akhavan is recognized for her expertise in teaching literacy practices and has published twelve books that focus on instruction to increase student achievement. She has worked with districts and county offices nationally and internationally to increase student achievement in reading, writing, and in content areas.
